Alvéole began in 2013 in Montreal, Canada, when three friends - Alex, Declan, and Étienne - set out to change the way people connect with nature in the city. After spending time working in industrial beekeeping in rural Canada, they saw firsthand how disconnected urban populations had become from pollinators, food systems, and biodiversity. They had a simple but ambitious idea: bring beekeeping into cities to spark curiosity, conversations, and a deeper connection with the natural world.
What started with just a few rooftop and backyard hives on personal properties has since grown into a movement across North America and Europe, transforming urban buildings into thriving ecosystems. Today, Alvéole partners with commercial real estate leaders to support biodiversity through beekeeping, habitat creation for wild bees, and ecological monitoring.
But at its core, Alvéole is still about people. Every hive and every project is an opportunity to educate, inspire, and empower communities, from tenants and employees to schoolchildren and neighbors. Tools like MyHive, our interactive platform, give participants a window into the lives of pollinators and help them feel part of something bigger.
Our mission remains the same as the day it started: to create greener, more connected cities, where nature has a place and people feel inspired to protect it.
